Common Core State Standards

Vision

The Whittier City School District will assume full implementation of the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, Mathematics, English Language Development and Literacy in History/Social Science, Science and Technical Subjects. WCSD will facilitate on-going learning opportunities for teachers to engage them in developing research based instructional practices to ensure continuous student improvement. Schools will foster collaboration by providing supportive structures and settings to enrich Professional Learning Communities focused on teaching and learning. To prepare students for a 21st Century job market, classroom experiences will be designed to encourage student creativity, increase meaningful discourse and communication, develop critical thinking skills, while providing opportunities for problem solving and collaboration, engaging students by means of technological resources and high quality materials.

Goals
  • Ensure teachers’ understanding of Common Core Standards and Instructional Shifts
  • Provide support for lesson design and methodology, as well as planning and resources for effective implementation of Common Core Standards
  • Provide training on integrating technology and the development of 21st Century Skills into classroom instruction
  • Promote teacher collaboration and protocols for enhancing Professional Learning Communities   
  • Develop parent understanding of the Common Core and strategies to support their children at home
