Introducing our Co-Interim Superintendents and Plans to Hire a Superintendent Search Firm
At the June 17, 2021 Special Board Meeting, the Board of Education interviewed interim superintendent candidates during closed session. After careful consideration, the Board selected Dr. Alan Rasmussen and Mr. Richard Tauer to serve as co-interim superintendents until a permanent superintendent is selected. Mr. Tauer and Dr. Rasmussen have over 40 years of experience in K - 12 education. They have both held the position of superintendent and have provided leadership as interim superintendents for several school districts. The unique advantage of having co-interim superintendents is that the District gains the talents and expertise of both individuals yet incurs no additional costs.
Dr. Alan Rasmussen has 13 years of experience as a superintendent. He has also served as an Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Educational Services, an elementary and middle school principal, and a classroom teacher.
Mr. Richard Tauer has 3 years of experience as a superintendent and twelve years of extensive experience in Human Resources. From 2000 - 2008, Mr. Tauer served as Whittier City School District’s Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources. He has taught at the elementary, middle, adult school, and graduate levels. In addition, he has served as a school principal as well as a director of state and federal programs and compliance.
The Board of Education intends to engage staff and community members throughout the process of selecting a new superintendent to lead the Whittier City School District. To provide assistance in this effort, the district will solicit proposals from firms that specialize in superintendent searches. These firms will be asked to present their proposals at the July 28, 2021 Special Board Meeting. On that date, presentations will occur in open session and a decision will be made in closed session.
After a firm is selected, the District will share the process that will be used to gather meaningful input from all stakeholders. This input is critical to finding our next superintendent. The Board of Education looks forward to engaging in this process with staff and community members.
