text Regina Morrison I'm a position I work for at the LA County Department of Public Health I also a primary care providers at the center hospital and then a particularly relevant to this presentation I also want to tell you that I am a mother of a five-year-old and a nine-year-old so when I have been looking at information covid in children and the vaccine in children I'm doing it with all of these hats as a public health doctor as primary care doctor and as a mom so this is brief outline of what I'm going to talk about a little bit of general information on the vaccines just so we're all on the same page then I'm going to talk a little bit about what we know of the risks of covid infection in children which is you know how we make decisions about whether or not we want to vaccinate you want to know why why are we trying to prevent season infections that give you a lot of specific information about the new box Pfizer vaccine for children 5 to 11 then I have a few slides on other topics including boosters which we are now recommending for everybody In and Out Burger and it has been a little confusing so I like to go over it because I'm sure people had her different things earlier and then we'll have lots of time for questions so the basics on the vaccine we have three excellent vaccines that are safe and work very well to prevent covid prevention from getting sick from missing work they prevent you from ending up in the hospital if you have covid they're available for everyone ages 5 and over and there's many many places to get vaccinated in Los Angeles County right now we have lots of vaccine so these are just the general information on the three different types of the first one on the left is the Pfizer vaccine that's the one that we have in one formulation for children 5 to 11 and then you can also get it if you're older it's two doses 21 days apart and it's made of mRNA the moderna vaccine is also made of mRNA that one is not yet available for children at 8:18 and it's two doses 28 days apart and then the third option is made in a slightly different way that's the Johnson & Johnson vaccine that's made with DNA and that's just one dose so let's talk let's take a step back for a second and talk about what we've learned since the beginning of the pandemic about how covid and affect children in this Easter 5 to 11 so fortunately since the pandemic had hit us last year we had more than two million cases of covid in children 5 to 11 in of those pieces more than 8,000 of the children had to stay in the hospital we also want to highlight that children are at risk for a complication from covid Mi s it stands for multi inflammatory syndrome and it's a it's a medical problem that comes about a month or two after you have covid-19 I'll still get it and it's like cool body inflammation get information of a heart you can get information of the kidneys and in kids 5 to 11 would see more than 2,000 cases of that in the United States and then I'm we in in this age group we have seen 94 deaths from covid so you know I just like to highlight this because you know when we were you know I'm a mom and I really wanted my kids to go by and I'm so grateful for the schools in taking the back and taking such good care of them so we were really stressing then you know we can do so many things to prevent covid it's not as dangerous as it is as it is an adult and it's screw the chances of getting really bad Co guitar lesson children but it's not impossible, and we do see even kids can die from her friend so here's a little of how many cases we had in children's is here in Los Angeles County so you can see in the middle is this big mountain this was last winter so when we have that horrible surge covid numbers went up among adults they went right up among kids and we saw a lot of kids get sick and this at this point most of our kids weren't even in school so they weren't getting it will they were getting it in when we saw the numbers go down during the summer and then they came back up and this is when the Delta Burien arrive so we saw it also that affected children we saw more cases than we have seen not with not not seem very much spread in school which is amazing or schools are doing such a good job but whenever we see more cases in the community we do see more cases and children so these are the numbers sew-in kids 10:55 in LA county with about 80,000 cases 376 of the children actually needed to stay in the hospital for a kid and then we have one best year old so here is also the the general numbers of his who died from covid so here are the kids bipolar eligible for this new vaccine and it may sound like you know not so many kids 94 kids but kids in this age group are so healthy generally that even if 94 kids have died from covid that actually puts it in the top ten causes of death for kids in in the United States so here's a little more about Missy so as I mentioned we've had about thousand pieces in kids between 5 and 11:00 5000 pieces if you sound older kids but the most common age is nine so the kids at highest risk for this are right in the age group were talking about vaccinating now and we've actually seen in the United States nine kids have died from this condition and many of the kids have ongoing competition and then another reason that I thought about when they making the decision to vaccinate my kids was that we also do see kids with long-term symptoms from covid-19 don't know as much about it as being for adults but it seems like maybe seven to eight percent of kids will have these long symptoms including fatigue headache trouble sleeping trouble concentrating and is you can imagine how this can be very destructive for a young kid who is you know trying to go to school enjoy activities like sports be with friends so we we also Factor the cinnamon we want to provide getting any of these symptoms by getting vaccinated and then there's a couple other ways that covid has really affected our kids so one of that is school closures so this is Jayda from this year but already as of October we had had 1.2 million kids who missed school because someone in the school or multiple people in the school at Coban and the classes had to close you can imagine this number last year was much higher because so many of the schools were completely closed and that's been incredibly disruptive we know there is a direct relationship the number of kids in school who are vaccinated and then need to close school because of cases and so here's a real big picture view of all the effects know that code kids we know its effect mental health and emotional health education gaps are getting bigger we seem kids gain weight because they didn't have as much access to physical activity and playing they've been missing doctor's regular check-ups which means some of them other vaccines that they need some kids are exposed to more traumatic experiences at home and and maybe the most difficult would be that really hundreds of thousands of kids have lost so this will bring it to an end he's really so that's the background on what we know about moving in kids so what do we know about the new vaccine so the Pfizer vaccine for kids 5 to 11 it's the same vaccine it made the same way as the vaccine for adults but the kids get a smaller dose of the vaccine dose is not based on how big it is based on their age and it's also two shots 21 day so here's some information we got from the US study that showed the FDA that the vaccine was safe and effective so they did this exactly the same way they done with other vaccines they took more than 3,000 children and they gave them the vaccine and then they compared to a to a group of about 1500 kids got a placebo and they look to see if it was safe and they look to see if it prevented covin in covid the kids from getting sick with Coke and they found that it was very effective it was 91% effective for preventing and they did not see any serious side effects and all those 3,000 kids they followed them the biggest group of them were followed for about 3 months and they have any serious side effects so there were side effects all talk about that you do have a sore arm often that's the most common side effects and then some kids also said they had a headache but there were no serious side and I'm happy to answer more questions about I know that's really important so in summary the Pfizer vaccine is 91% at affect effective at preventing covid-19 infection we also know that this study was done at a time when the Delta Varian was the main kind of covid travel around so we know that this works very well for the Delta Burien which is still the main Burien that we see in Los Angeles there were no serious adverse effect as I mentioned the most common non serious side effects for pain at the injection site of fatigue and headache and then they also looked at whether it was safe for kids who had already had it cuz we know I said a lot of kids already had and they had a substantial number of kids in the group who had had who would already and they looked at whether they had were side effects and they do equally safe so this is just a couple summary slides on how I like to think about the reasoning behind vaccinating our kids so we know what's 90% of 5 we can prevent covid infections including the post covid long covid Missy and prevent your kid from being hospitalized many kids with covid-19 are units some kids actually and we also know that we're going to keep our kids in school I'm allowing for more social interactions but you're very important to their mental health and physical health and then obviously all the warming nothing my kids don't just live by themselves they are part of a family and vaccinating our kids also benefits the family can reduce the chances of transmission to other vulnerable family members grandparents or caretakers or people with underlying medical conditions and also the kids aren't going to be missing so much school for parents who then don't have to miss work one more ring around this is that by getting our kids vaccinated will see lower transmission within the community and schools and keep our kids in the classrooms so that's why the info number to prevent on the kids vaccines but let me give you a little more information on other quote topics and then we'll go to questions so there might be some questions about Mandy and I know your school district star on the call to answer those questions there's a lot of confusion so right now the only mandate we have your school district does not have a mandate you might have heard of one cuz Los Angeles LAUSD has a mandate for kids 12 and up so four children were in leusd they are required to be vaccinated if they're over 12 but that's not true for younger there's actually no school district yet that high any mandate for younger children what we have heard from the state is that they plan to mandate the covid vaccine once it has full FDA approval and they were do it until this semester after it gets the approval so that it's not going to happen before the end of the year so the earliest we would see any kind of mandate will be next fall so right now we're not till you but there's a mandate and we're not telling you have to get vaccinated I'm just telling I'm just here to tell you why I think it's the right thing to do when you are you can make that choice for your kids and then I just threw in this one slide this is all there is some the CDC website about this new variant Omicron which has been described and Southern so the main thing I want to say about because you might have heard about it in the in the news is that we don't have enough information right now to know whether or not it's it's more dangerous so there's a lot of headlines that sound very scary and the truth is we just don't know yet we don't we don't know that the vaccine isn't going to be really effective I know that in southern Africa most of the people got really sick with this were not vaccinated so that's good evidence that the Mexicans are still protecting mostly we just don't know so there's no reason to think though there's a new variant I should wait and get back to me right now what we have in Los Angeles and what we've had for months is that very transmissible Delta Marion and we know that the vaccine works very well for the Delta variants and still absolutely the right thing to do to get this taxi in right now okay then a couple couple sides about boosters so the booster we use it to do sort of remind your immune system how to have a strong response we think those first two shots might not quite be enough there's a lot of vaccines that we get when we were kids we actually need three shots to really teach the body how to make the response so right now we we recommend that everybody over the age of 18 get the and you can actually get a booster with whichever vaccine is the easiest on you can pick you don't have to get the one you got first so that's great because it makes it possible it also can make it a little bit I don't know what to choose so that mean thing I tell people is that the reason we don't recommend one booster over the others is because they all were so if you're going to get a booster. go get the one that's easiest to get you want to go down the block to the pharmacy and they have Pfizer gets visor if you got Johnson & Johnson and you and you liked it Go Get It Again from the same place donkey balls some people really likes to go into the details of the rare side effects and then she was there for that way that's fine you can talk to your doctor on but the truth all three of them were so if you got J&J you just have to wait two months after he left the first shot and then you get stuck the shop and you can choose if you got Pfizer or you just need to we need to wait 6 months and then everybody gets a boost we really strongly recommended for older people at the Point headed into the winter we are very concerned because it's getting colder other parts of the country right now or seeing more covid cases and we don't want that to happen to us so now is a great time for everybody to get a booster but especially people older and have under lineup picture of the same thing like six months and then you get your booster dose and then I think you'll hear a little bit more about options of where to get vaccinated you can always go to vaccinate LA County. Calm and then it will walk you through all the different options there's lots of walk-in clinic pharmacies my kids are about their second spot at the grocery store pharmacy so and it's also great options you can talk to your pediatrician or you can go to school okay and then you guys are all text hubby on this call and if you know somebody who doesn't want to use the internet to make an appointment that's fine we have a toll free number that they can call and someone will help you okay question that I get cuz I've talked to a lot of different communities about this and we all have the same goal we want to do what's right for our kids so one of the questions is sort of you know kids don't really get that sick from covid-19 the vaccine you know people will say well the kids who got really sick they all had underlying conditions donate kids with really rare conditions that need to get them seems so I don't think my kids needed so that's a great question you want to make sure you're not doing something unnecessary the of the kids who died from it is true that almost pretty all of them have a pre-existing condition so but those pre-existing conditions aren't necessarily rare things that aren't true about our kids some of the kids who dyed their only competition with asthma very common amongst kids so that's kind of scary and that's a great reason to get vaccinated the other thing that puts our kids at risk is obesity which is really common and unfortunately we've seen the number is the percentages of our kid are described as obese has gone off because they were stuck inside so much during the pandemic so it's not just kids with rare diseases who died from covid in even worse a lot of the kids who end up in the hospital so about a third of the kids to discuss covid and ended up having to stay in the hospital for kids with no pre-existing conditions and I don't know you might think while they were in the hospital they got out there okay but being a hustle for it isn't you know they're in a weird place there's needles on they might have to have some of those super me as a mom that's a great read get my kid back Sunday that I do not want them to have to be in the hospital and then it's also true of the inflammatory condition Miss see about half of the kids we saw in the hospital with Missy had no. so for me that's a really good reason to get the back seat so that's one set of questions in a section okay great questions thank you so much for jumping in there so I see from Hilda can I just read them to myself so Jas is it advised to have our children tested for allergies Sherman if they're allergic so we do get a lot of questions about allergies we don't we don't advise allergy testing the the components of the vaccines are things that are present in other medic he sends their present another vaccines so you you we wouldn't test all the kids to figure out if they're allergic to the components of the backseat really really really so and then other signs of allergies like if your kid is allergic to pets or it peanuts or other food or has asthma or allergic to plant it turns out that doesn't increase your risk for being alert the covid vaccine so for kids who know they're allergic to one component of the covid vaccine we recommend they go to an allergy specialist still recommend to get evaluated some of those kids can get the vaccine and but for the rest of our kids other kinds of allergies the only ones we asked about is his your kid ever had a severe allergic reaction to another vaccine and in that you want to talk to your doctor doesn't mean you can't get the vaccine it just means that you talk to your doctor and you get monitor okay so vaccinated children don't transmit covid so this is another great question I guess so when we first came out with the vaccine for adults they had just studied whether or not he kept you out of the hospital or prevented you from dying which is the best scenes are super effective but we couldn't really tell if people who are vaccinated would maybe not be able to ever get covid-19 transmitted to it but we were hoping but then they were very long and it's very contagious eventually we figured out that people who are vaccinated they can get the Delta variance and they can transmit the Delta Marion but they were still much much less likely to end up sick or in the hot do or die so that's it's too bad it would be would be amazing if the vaccine to prevent everything but it's still very very effective and that is also true that the same for children it's much less likely if you're vaccinated you're less likely to get covid-19 sweet what you had it so if you have to get the vaccine and then you actually get brakes and what we know is that you're not infectious for as long because you don't get his 60 you're you're not coughing as long you're not sick as long so you are less infection doesn't mean it's impossible that you could get it and give it somebody else that's unfortunately true but for me that's something to keep in mind but it's not a good reason to not get the back seat because it's still going to prevent my kids from ending up in the hospital and it does decrease the but the kid is exposed to covid less likely with the impossible hey what is the percentage of kids getting I'm sorry I skipped Jays question I'll go back to it so you know it's kind of amazing when they look at when they do blood tests of how many kids have gotten covid is super high it's like maybe 40% of our kids have gotten covid since the beginning of the pandemic and a lot of those kids never had symptoms so we didn't know but it does seem like definitely catch covid and the best 40% before they went back to school so now that they're back in school you know the schools are doing great but you probably kids are catching Nikki Walden they're definitely at higher risk now so we know we ask we know that kids can catch covid and a lot of kids have cost of it so well did you want to ask Google no I'm not following all the fancy parts of your Zoom fast enough so back to Jay's question is the vaccine safe for children with heart condition so if your kid has a heart condition then I think that you it's a really good idea to talk to their pediatrician but the general answer is absolutely in fact for kids with hurting send covid is so dangerous giving me infection is so dangerous that we really need those pants together so the one thing so one thing you probably heard about is that with the Pfizer vaccine in teenagers we see an increased risk for heart inflammation so that's something we were very concerned about make sure you know she stopped giving the vaccine they look very he carefully and what they found is a couple things so in order and teenagers mostly boys the chances of getting the heart information from the vaccine are very low like 50 kids. got it out of the million and the kids who got the heart information they got better and they're totally back so it's it's it's definitely a scary side effect you wouldn't want your teenager but they get better and their heart was beat me back to normal and so when we compare that to what it looks like if your teenager get scolded it's actually much the kids are much more likely to get heart wrong covid and it's the kind of heart inflammation that doesn't go away right away and have lasting effects and so and it's related to that condition that I so even an older kid where we did see more heart inflammation with the Pfizer vaccine we still say that you should get the box know if you happen to just have her information cuz it does have in teenagers to wait until your heart is basically back to normal before you get the vaccine but we still would definitely want you to get that I seen because it is so much more and the good news is is her inflammation in general is more common in older kids it's very rare in kids 5 through 11 so in the studies were they took three thousand kids and gave them the the new visor nobody got the heart of the nation so we still absolutely recommended for people with heart conditions okay so I see Miss Lopez Lopez what are the long-term effects of the vaccines where can I find the studies who will cover the liability of adverse reaction so really good question a lot of parents are worried about long-term effects of vaccines so I've actually learned a lot about this in being part of the health department response there's a there's a general concern That vaccine might go into our body and cause some sort of problem and we're not going to see it for like 10 years going to pop up 10 years from now and I I also started my headphones remember is being when I was pregnant being told no no don't take the medication cuz it might have an effect on the development of the baby and you what you would see the effects later on so it's definitely something as your instance bouncing around in our heads don't want to make a mistake now and then find out about it 10 years later so the good news is with vaccines is they don't work the same way as medications and of every vaccine with ever studied the longest we've ever had to to see a side effect is six weeks so we've never seen a side effect from any vaccine that showed up even three months later it's receipt weaves you know and we have you know almost 100 years of experience with giving all those different vaccines were kids so given that and most vaccine side effects show up right away like that the hard information that we see an older teenagers that shows up within a couple the most of the side effects me see like fatigue and headache is within one or two days and the main reason for that is that the vaccine goes in it doesn't spot you know it's not in your system traveling around. in your body you put it in your arm and your immune system reaction starts there and then that travels all over your body and the vaccine is gone within like 1 or 2 days you can't even find the MRNA at your body breaks down something the only thing that's there is the immune response and our immune response is traveling around our body all the time and it doesn't you know there's no reason to think of it as a long-term effect a lot of people ask about is that going to affect fertility we've never seen a vaccine that work that way we've never seen a vaccine have any effect on fertility and actually now that we've had the covid vaccine for almost a year we have a lot of good evidence there's why lots of women who got the covid vaccine and then became pregnant and when we compare them we looked at all the people who wanted to be pregnant there was no difference in whether you got the back seat everybody had the same chance of getting pregnant so so like I said so we we we know that there the longest effect we've ever seen of the vaccine is six weeks so every vaccine study follows the kids or at least eight weeks and that's exactly what this so if you want to look at the study of all the effects of the Pfizer vaccine then you look at the Pfizer study which followed this like group of three thousand kids in the biggest group of them were followed for more than two months a lot of them it's three months and they didn't see any serious side effects not one in terms of liability from adverse reactions there's actually a federal program that covers any adverse reactions today child has the federal government has a full program that takes care of families but the adverse reactions that we expect to see are like I sent the sore arm I'm feeling tired and that's usually gone within 12 days okay question from the Zavala family my child were turned 12 after his first dose of the vaccine will the second dose also be the pediatric dose or will he have to get the regular dose this is a great question there's so many kids in this situation all the time so we actually do recommend that once the child turns 12 that he gets the adult use a little silly I know but the amount of vaccine is determined by like and so we know for 11 year olds they have a slightly younger immune system and we know that that smaller doses enough as you get closer to 12 then we recommend the full dose actually kids immune systems are the best they are super powerful they need smaller dose to produce a really good reaction and they protect them and then as we get older and we just aren't as strong and sometimes we need a higher dose is there from Aramis is there a recommended wait time for getting the booster shot after getting the flu shot no we recommend you get both as soon as possible to get them on the same day I got I think I got my booster in my left arm in my shot in my right and there you can get them there you don't have to wait at all 3 has a couple question is getting your team vaccinated War risking myocarditis so really good question I like that you're really getting into the details of how to make this decision so unfortunately there's a risk of myocarditis no matter what you do right now I still have a lot of Coban in our communities and I don't know what you guys feel like as parents like I I definitely want to protect my children everything sometimes I just want to like you know put them a rooming house and never let them out but what I've seen is that they need to go to school they need to be with their friends and he do their Sports so I want them to be able to do that which means I cannot 100% Adam from getting hope so because they have a risk of getting home if they have a risk of myocarditis from that and so we're me the question is and this is Trooper a teen as well do I want risk of getting myocarditis from covid-19 Dove myocarditis that doesn't necessarily go away and then the rest of getting the vaccine myocarditis which is extremely rare and in all cases was mild and went away so that for me that's how the question comes out and so I strongly recommend you to vaccinate our team so can we also talk about the rare but possible side effects in some of the things that I mean I don't I don't want to go through all the rare side effects is there are many that's the main thing we no about whom it is that it's very very inflamed ettore so we do see people have heart attacks and strokes and Long Cove in this multi-system inflammatory disease children and so some of these things aren't aren't, you know most people who get covid-19 children don't get them but for me even the chance that even if it's asked more chance that I could happen to my child I just don't want to take my chances with that I want to protect them with the vaccine I'm very comfortable that the vaccine is safe and that the side effects of the vaccine arm and so for me it makes sense Carla says why are you pushing so much for the vaccine when kids and adults can still get covid-19 don't I don't want to push you so I'm sorry I can get very passionate about this but I don't want to put your choice you got to do what's right for your family but I do think that when we when we answer all the questions that we get all the questions then I think it is really clear that that the vaccine is the right decision to protect our kids we don't just recommend back teens because they prevent you getting the disease completely like I said with covid-19 Port thing is that the kids don't get really sick they don't end up in the hospital and they don't end up dying so there's a lot of diseases that most kids would get a mild case but we still vaccinated for Chickenpox that was you know many many of us had chickenpox but now our kids get back to Native because some kid have severe cases of chickenpox in the end up in the hospital and we can prevent that with the vaccines and so that's why we recommend them what if someone has a heart condition but does not know about it the vaccine fragrant no there's no reason to think the vaccine would trigger a heart condition same idea though if someone has a heart condition and they don't know about it really don't want if you don't want to take the helmet so we want them to get vaccinated so that we don't see any complications oh thank you I see it so the percentage of kids getting covid so this was from I can email a link to do to you guys to send it out this is from a study of antibodies that recently came out that was for the United States so they took children from were the 50 states and they looked in their blood to see if they had evidence that they had had covid and the number of kids with positive antibodies was up at 40% if you don't have other questions on one other thing I just like the Highlight is a little bit of logistics of what will change when kids get vaccinated cuz sometimes people say old and they stopped wearing their masks and so obviously that's that's not quite the case but one of the important things that will change is for people who are fully vaccinated including kids which happens two weeks after your second dose if you get exposed to somebody who test positive you don't have to and that's because the risks of you getting poked it is so much lower because you're vaccinated so if somebody say in your child's classroom has positive you know let's imagine the first week of January they come back the kids you are fully vaccinated don't necessarily still have to stay home so V Lopez again went to doubt that you can still spread it but obviously if you're if you're less likely to get it then you're less likely to spread it you get it you can spread it but you spread it for a blessed I'm still in the classroom settings if we have a child who tests positive sometimes will sometimes will recommend that the other kids get tested but they don't have to stay home so they can continue going to school being with their friends you can continue working you don't have to drop that and that's okay it's slipping a lot of kids were trying to do their Sports and it's all disrupted because the kids are testing positive and then the team can't play or the players so that's one good thing so Carlos question so there might be more for you guys thank you we are going to be following the LA County Manatees currently we are not slated to fall in line with Los Angeles Unified School District that is our current our current time and we do offer distance learning for families that prefer to not have an in-school option and at this point it is not known what governor newsom's mandate will mean for the State of California at large and we are eagerly waiting to see what the legislature will decide on and as that becomes available we will only communicate with our public so that you guys are as impressed as we are what's happening another question from Anaya Chavez so as I mentioned before there's a federal program that compensates people who have serious side effects from any vaccine that's been in existence for a long time for minor side effects we really don't see very much disruption mostly that the most common thing is having pain in the arm goes away with in like a day so I can answer be Lopez right now we do not know what governor Newsom mandate will will entail at is not known to the district right now so we can receive whether there will be a required. Seem for in person learning we have to wait for the governor and legislature to finalize that information and that's just not available to any school yet but we will not ahead of Any Man dates and Carla we we currently have options for families and we have been using those option this year we have our virtual learning independent study that's available and option that we can deploy and we have been certainly thinking about that and that option includes live opportunities for learning and opportunity for families to continue being a part of Whittier City okay we do not have questions regarding the vaccine doctor Morrison thank you been great to hear from everybody thank you very much we appreciate the opportunity to have you this evening answer questions to help our community better understand the vaccine I know I learned a lot from his opportunity so I really appreciate this again I'd like to thank our Board of Trustees members battle how to get probably be here in window small for joining us this evening and I'd like to hand it over to mr.
